What are Tongue and Lip Ties?

Tongue ties are a small band of tissue that connects the tongue too tightly to the floor of the mouth. Lip ties occur most commonly on the upper lip and have to do with a band of tissue that tethers the lip.

Nursing issues are by far the most common problem caused by tongue ties. In infants, tongue ties can hinder the tongue from reaching their palate which is necessary for a proper latch while breast feeding. If a child’s tongue is not able to function properly and causes issues with swallowing, nursing may become very frustrating and/or painful for both child and mother.

If left unattended for a longer amount of time, oral restrictions can start to affect other aspects including sleep and speech.

  • Speech: can be negatively affected by the tongue not being able to move freely, so helping it to move freely is a step in the right direction
  • Sleep: can also be negatively affected by incorrect tongue position, since the basis for healthy breathing during sleep and facial development is correct tongue positioning.

How the Procedure Works

A consultation will indicate whether your child will benefit from a tongue or lip tie treatment. We don’t perform unnecessary procedures. We take the time to talk it through together and explain why we feel your child does or does not need a procedure.

Using a state-of-the-art Light Scalpel CO2 dental laser, we easily release ties in a 10-15 second procedure, usually with minimal to no bleeding. Babies are usually gone from mom no longer than 7-10 minutes. You’ll be surprised how quick and easy it is.

Babies are able to go to mom immediately following the procedure and nurse if needed. The recovery only takes minutes and children can resume normal functioning almost immediately.

What Our Customers Are Saying

We’ve been really impressed with the care we’ve gotten here.

"We came in last week for his tongue and lip tie and we have had amazing progress since then. He had a pretty severe one and instantly we noticed a difference with him babbling more and making more noises which we noticed he wasn’t doing. We’ve had trouble with feeding, and we’re making big improvements with that. We’ve been really impressed with the care we’ve gotten here. We've been treated like family, and just very well taken care of. We recommend Chattanooga Tongue Tie; we would do it again and I think Quincy would agree."

Can't recommend them enough!

"Dr. Wright and his staff were amazing helping my 3 day old daughter when she was having nursing issues due to tongue and lip tie. They were great at explaining things, giving us time to make our decision and had a nice private room for me to nurse my baby before and after procedure. he prayed with use before the procedure and made us comfortable going through a tough thing just a few days into her life. Can't recommend them enough!"

...super thankful for Doctor Wright helping us out.

"He [Asher] was having trouble whenever we were feeding him solids and was struggling to sleep well. We brought him here to Doctor Wright's office and found that his tongue and lips were super tight. We had both tongue and lip revised and even that day after he had the revision done I could tell a huge different in him eating and breastfeeding. His latch was so much better, he's been able to start taking solids really well, and he eats so well and is sleeping better. Overall we're just really happy with how well this is gone and super thankful for Doctor Wright helping us out. "

The staff really go out of their way to make sure your child has a positive experience.

"We have four kiddos ages 6, 4, 1 and 1 month. After 3 cleanings, 8 cavity repairs and 2 tongue ties done we can highly recommend Dr. Wright!!! We have had a great experience here with all the different procedures. I really appreciate how patient and gentle Dr. Wright is! My very medically adverse 4 year old was relaxed having her tongue tie done. He took the time "to do" the whole procedure on my daughter's Miss Piggy during one of her happy visits so she could understand what to expect. The staff really go out of their way to make sure your child has a positive experience. Thank you everyone at Chattanooga Tongue Tie Center!"

Top notch care; Happy baby, Happy mama.

"I had trouble/pain nursing my newborn along with other signs that indicated he had a lip tie. …it’s a very fast procedure. I had no pain nursing immediately after the procedure and have continued to see significant improvements since. Such a difference! Today we just had our 1 week follow up and the baby boy is doing great! It was definitely the right thing to do and am so happy I had Dr. Wright and his team do it!. Top notch care; happy baby, happy mama. Thank you Dr. Wright!"
